In my overhauled pedalboard, the @ehx Big Muff Tone Wicker is easily my least favourite pedal. I’m not necessarily a fuzz guy, and I’ve struggled to make the Big Muff work for me. In this video I decided to deep dive into it and mess around with various tones and settings to find one that actually sounds...good?

I had this @jet_guitars JS-600 on loan for videos and was fully expecting to give it back. After filming basically everything I wanted to film with it, the kind folks at Hal Leonard (Jet’s UK distributor) have let me keep this guitar, so it is now mine, all mine!

Traditional New Years Day walk complete. My mum was working until 3pm so we departed as soon as possible afterwards to squeeze half an hour walk in before the darkness fell. I do love tradition and rituals.

SAFE DRIVE 2025

Today we say goodbye to the year 2025 and I take a selfie and discuss the year that was.
*
In some ways 2025 was more of the same, I kept gigging, kept teaching, and I kept on keeping on. But it brought some new experiences.
I wrote a book – in fact I wrote 2 of them! These educational books were a huge stepping stone in my career, and I am thrilled at the support I had for them. I feel like I filled a niche and I’m intrigued to see what momentum I can carry forward next year as a teacher and educator.

I got to travel, both returning to Poland for a great ukulele festival but also to the USA where I met my friend Kearsten for the first time after 5 years of online teaching. I am so grateful for that trip, the food, the company and also the festival I got to play.
*
It was fitting to take this selfie in this park because this is where I am commonly found. I walk a now-11-year-old Brandy 4 times a day and I’ve loved her companionship both at home, at gigs, and also on studio sessions.
*
I’ve spent quality time with some of my family, and I’m grateful that I now live within 5 miles of them making such time more feasible than in my Manchester days.
*
This year like all years has brought some loss, but I feel like I’ve gotten better in managing that loss, where I can mourn its absence but be grateful for the presence it once had, and ultimately move forward.
*
As mentioned in last year’s post, I didn’t write or release any new music because I had nothing I particularly wanted to say. Maybe that will change in 2026, maybe it won’t. What I did do in its place was make a lot of content. Taking influences from some creators I watch recreationally, I started talking more about gear and I have found this really fulfilling. I’ve enjoyed the way my on-camera style has developed, and I am proud of how I’ve fostered and grown relationships with companies.

I failed to play electric guitar at a gig this year, so in 2026 I resolve to do that but also to stream on a weekly basis. I’ll update you on details in the new year.

NEW BASS

Here’s a Christmas present I got myself! I have 2 American Fender basses (one Precision, one Jazz) and I love both of those with rounds. I wanted something to do the flatwounds thing but I didn’t necessarily want to just get another P bass but instead something with its own personality outside of string choice.

Enter this, a 2010 Mexican Fender Deluxe P Bass. This is a P bass with a jazz bass neck, jazz bass bridge pickup and active circuitry. I modded a switch to passive for a more vintage sound but it feels like a great addition to my collection which fills a hole in terms of bass tone

To be honest, Christmas kind of caught me off guard. In December I was busy with other things to really get festive and wear my Christmas jumper or listen to Christmas music or watch Christmas films. Then next thing I knew the big day was a week away and I hadn’t bought anything.

Still, I made the best of it. I went to my mums for dinner and presents, the highlight of the day was taking the dogs for a lakeside walk and seeing how happy they were. There’s a bit of a whirlwind of emotions that now are a part of my Christmas Day, but I’m glad to have done what I did with what I had.

I hope you had a lovely time, and decompress appropriately as we round out the year that was.

I know it's Christmas but I thought I'd briefly look ahead to next summer (or you can call this post a Christmas gift, idk how you wanna frame it), but I wanted to announce that I'M PLAYING IN CANADA!

Canada has always fascinated me as a country, a culture and a people, and for years I have wanted to play in the Great White North. I'll be playing and teaching on July 17th-18th at Brantford Ukulele Festival in Brantford, Ontario. I'm thrilled to have been invited by Geneviève Rochette to play my 13th country, and I thought there was nothing more Canadian that I could share to mark the occasion than this picture of me being gifted 2 massive cans of maple syrup.

For all my Canadian fans, I will be in the country from July 15th to 25th and I would love to meet you all, to see a Mountie and a moose, and play and teach for your ukulele clubs. Get in touch, let's make something happen, I am so so excited!

A new company called @resonairr sent me a pack of their acoustic guitar strings, so I gave them a proper test.

I strung them up on my @takamineguitars G-Series, compared them to the dead set that was on there, and gave my honest thoughts on how they sound and feel.

At around £12 a pack, they’re not bargain strings — but they could be an interesting alternative if you’re looking for something new.
